Some of you who don't live close to me or aren't family may not know this but Gerrit is 21 months old and does not talk! He kind of says daddy in a weird mouth stuffed with cotton sort of way but that is it. So how the heck do I understand him??? Let me go back in time...back when Grace was 21 months and until the age of 3 she spoke Farsi, Tagalog, Russian you can put your own name to it but I can tell you one thing...it wasn't English. It was soooo frustrating because she would really be trying to tell me something and I had no Grace to English dictionary. I swore then that I would teach our next kid sign language. Now, back to the present. When Gerrit was about 6 months old I started teaching him sign language. Jaelyn and I counted it up one day and he uses 40 signs and understands more than that! I am so glad that I taught it to him because there is no frustration for him or me!! When we have a babysitter the kids translate for him. So, call Gerrit Helen Keller and call me Ann Sullivan (the lady that taught Helen)

Tiffany thats great you can sign with Gerrit. I am on a yahoo group for moms with babies born in Oct 2006, and several of them sign with their babies as well.
He IS talking, with sign, just as you taught him . . . It's neat, but could be a reason he feels no need to talk . . . . just a thought.
My aunts still call me Helen or Hell for short - why? Because when I was young I licked the dinner plates after everyone was done, and the food would end up sealing my eyes and my ears somehow would be full of food. Hence - Helen.
Just a little random factoid about my lame life.
